Reefer container vs reefer truck: when each one actually makes sense
Temperature-controlled cargo leaving Europe for the Caucasus or Central Asia has two real ways to travel: boxed in a reefer container by sea, or loaded directly into a reefer truck for the whole road journey. Neither is the default choice — which one actually costs less and keeps the cold chain tighter depends on the load size, the destination, and the delivery date, not on habit. This sets out the actual decision, not a generic rule of thumb.

None of these four factors decides the choice alone — a shipment that is full-container-load, Caucasus-bound and flexible on timing points toward the sea leg, while a shipment that is any one of the opposite — partial, Central-Asia-bound, or date-fixed — usually points toward the road truck instead.
Why the cost-per-pallet math favors the sea leg only at scale
The cost-per-pallet math for a sea reefer container only works in the shipper's favor once the box is genuinely full: the ocean freight, port handling and cross-stuffing cost the same whether the container carries twenty pallets or thirty-two, so a half-empty reefer container is paying full freight for partial cargo.
A road reefer truck does not have that threshold — the truck costs roughly what it costs whether it is carrying a full load or a partial one, which flips the comparison for anything short of a genuinely full container: at that point the per-pallet cost of the truck starts to look better than a container running well under capacity.
The destination changes the comparison: Caucasus versus Central Asia
Where the cargo is actually going changes which option even applies. Cargo staying within the Caucasus can travel boxed the entire way and never gets cross-stuffed at all, which is the cheapest version of the sea route; cargo continuing into Central Asia gets cross-stuffed at Poti regardless, the way covered in detail at the Poti reefer terminal, so the sea leg's main advantage — staying sealed in one box — disappears for exactly the cargo it would otherwise suit best.
Why a reefer box is a bigger detention risk than a dry box
A reefer box is a bigger detention risk than the same dry container, for a reason that has nothing to do with the cargo inside it: shipping lines have fewer reefer boxes in circulation than dry boxes, and a reefer container held past its free time is a scarcer, costlier asset for the line to be missing, which tends to show up as a shorter free-time allowance and closer tracking than a dry container gets on the same route.
When a partial load makes the road truck the only real option
A load that does not fill a container is where the comparison stops being close. Paying full container freight to move a dozen pallets is paying for space that never gets used, and the same cargo on a dedicated road reefer truck — sized to the actual load rather than to a fixed box — usually comes out cheaper per pallet even before detention risk is counted.
The reverse is also true: a genuinely full container load moving in bulk to a Caucasus destination is close to the cheapest way to move temperature-controlled cargo from Europe, and there is no reason to book several road reefer trucks to replicate what one full container already does at a lower cost per pallet.

None of these four questions has a universally right answer — they are the questions worth asking before booking either option, because the wrong mode for a given load shows up as cost, not as a service failure.

Booking the wrong mode for a load does not usually break the cold chain outright — it just makes the shipment more expensive or slower than it needed to be, in ways that are easy to miss until the invoice or the delivery date arrives:
- A partial load booked as a full container, paying for space that never gets used
- A Central-Asia-bound container booked as if it could travel boxed the whole way, missing the cross-stuffing step it actually needs
- A date-fixed delivery booked by sea, tied to a sailing schedule that does not move for anyone
- A full container load split across several road trucks, paying more per pallet than the container would have cost
- Detention risk on a reefer container underestimated because it was budgeted like a dry container
- A single reefer truck booked for a load that actually needs two trucks, discovered only at loading

Documentation differs by mode
The two modes also carry different paperwork.
