What multimodal transport is

Multimodal transport is the movement of cargo by two or more modes (road, rail, sea, air) under one transport document, handled by a single multimodal transport operator (MTO). The client deals with one contractor instead of five separate carriers.

How it works — a sample route

A classic multimodal shipment on our direction looks like this: factory (China) → truck to the station → rail (Baku–Tbilisi–Kars) → sea (Port of Poti) → truck → warehouse in Ukraine. Every leg is under one contract and one operator (see the diagram above).

Multimodal vs intermodal transport

The terms are close but not identical. Multimodal means one contract and one operator for the whole route. Intermodal also uses several modes, but the cargo travels in a single loading unit (container) and often under several separate contracts with different carriers.
