UAE free zones and re-export: JAFZA, DAFZA and how it works

Europe → UAE9 min read

The UAE's status as a hub rests on its free zones — bonded areas where cargo is stored duty-free and re-exported without UAE import duty. For a forwarder on the Europe–Gulf lane this is the core tool: consolidate European cargo, hold it, and send it onward to Africa, the CIS or India. Here is how it works.

What a free zone is

A free zone is a designated bonded area outside UAE customs territory: 0% import/export duty, 100% foreign ownership and full profit repatriation. Goods pay duty only if they enter the UAE mainland; while they stay in the zone — or leave for re-export — no UAE duty applies.

Main logistics free zones

Free zoneLocationBest for
JAFZAAttached to Jebel Ali port (Dubai)The largest; sea cargo, consolidation, re-export by container
DAFZANext to DXB airport (Dubai)High-value and air cargo, fast re-export
KIZADKhalifa Port (Abu Dhabi)Industrial and bulk, manufacturing + logistics
Dubai South / DWCAl Maktoum airport (Dubai)Air-sea combined, e-commerce, growing hub
DMCCCentral Dubai (JLT)Commodities: metals, tea, diamonds — trade + storage

How re-export works

European cargo enters the free zone duty-free, where it is stored, consolidated or repacked, then re-exported onward — again with no UAE duty, only a small handling fee. Compare with a mainland import: 5% GCC duty + 5% VAT. For onward trade, the free-zone route is far cheaper.

Free zone vs mainland

  • Final market is the UAE → import to the mainland (pay 5% duty + 5% VAT).
  • Onward re-export (Africa/CIS/India) → keep in the free zone, no UAE duty.
  • Consolidating cargo from several countries → the free zone is the natural staging point.

Documents and customs

Cargo moves on a free-zone bill of entry with no duty deposit; onward shipments use standard export documents (invoice, packing list, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin). A new CoO can be issued for the re-exported consignment.

How we help

ABU JORJIA receives your European cargo into JAFZA or another zone, stores and consolidates it, and arranges onward re-export — one operator across the whole chain. See the lane guide — shipping from Europe to the UAE — and certification for the UAE. For import into Ukraine specifically, see Dubai free zones.

Development prospects

UAE free zones keep expanding — new JAFZA and KIZAD capacity, the Dubai South air-sea hub, Etihad Rail links and digital customs — making duty-free storage and re-export faster and more reliable each year.

Summary

Free zones are why the UAE is a re-export hub: duty-free storage, 0% duty on onward shipments, and a natural point to consolidate European cargo for Africa, the CIS and India. ABU JORJIA runs the whole chain — ask us.
