Shipping from Europe to the UAE: a freight forwarder's guide
The UAE is the trade and re-export hub of the Middle East: European machinery, cars, food, furniture, cosmetics and building materials flow into it — and onward through it to Africa, the CIS and India. This guide covers the Europe → UAE lane end to end: modes, ports, transit times, documents, duties, free zones and Incoterms.
Transport modes
| Mode | Route & transit | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sea (FCL / LCL) | Rotterdam · Hamburg · Antwerp · Genoa · Trieste → Jebel Ali · Khalifa Port; ~14–28 days | Volume, heavy and bulky: machinery, furniture, tiles, building materials |
| Air | Frankfurt · Amsterdam · Liège → DXB · DWC · AUH; 1–3 days | Urgent, high-value, low-weight: pharma, electronics, samples, spare parts |
| Road + sea / multimodal | Via Turkey / Mediterranean under one contract | Project and oversized cargo, flexible routing |
Most European cargo moves by sea to Jebel Ali; air handles urgent and high-value goods; multimodal road+sea suits project and oversized cargo. We pick the mode by weight, value and deadline.
Ports and gateways
- Jebel Ali (Dubai) — the largest port in the region (DP World), with the JAFZA free zone attached; the main sea gateway.
- Khalifa Port (Abu Dhabi) — a modern deep-water port with the KIZAD industrial zone.
- Air: DXB and DWC (Al Maktoum, cargo) in Dubai, AUH in Abu Dhabi.
Documents
The core set: commercial invoice, packing list, Bill of Lading / AWB, Certificate of Origin (sometimes legalized/attested), a certificate of conformity (ECAS/ESMA) for regulated goods, a packing declaration and insurance; food adds health/halal papers. Full breakdown — shipping documents.
Duties and taxes
- GCC common tariff — 5% on the CIF value of most goods; many foodstuffs and pharma are 0%.
- VAT — 5% on import to the UAE mainland.
- Free zone — 0% duty while goods stay in the zone; duty applies only on entry to the mainland, and re-export out incurs no UAE duty.
Free zones and re-export
JAFZA, DAFZA and KIZAD let you store cargo duty-free and re-export it onward to Africa, the CIS and India — the core reason the UAE is a hub. Mechanics — UAE free zones and re-export.
Product certification
Electronics, cosmetics, toys, building materials and food usually need ECAS / ESMA conformity and registration before clearance. Details — certification for the UAE.
Incoterms for the lane
For control we usually recommend FCA or FOB — the buyer's forwarder takes over at origin; CIF shifts freight/insurance to the seller; DDP delivers duty-paid to the UAE. See Incoterms 2020, EXW vs FOB, FOB vs CIF, DDP vs DAP.
