How a wagon is matched to the cargo

The wagon type is chosen by the properties of the cargo:

  • liquid (oil, fuel, chemicals) → tank wagon;
  • free-flowing, self-discharging (grain, cement, fertiliser) → hopper;

Boxcar

The boxcar is a universal "shed on wheels" with a roof and side doors. It carries packaged goods that need protection from weather and dust: boxes, bags, pallets, paper, equipment, bagged grain. Payload is 55–69 tonnes, body volume 78–135 m³.

Gondola (open wagon)

The gondola is an open-top wagon with high sides, the most common on the network. It carries bulk cargo: coal, ore, gravel, rolled metal, timber, pipes. Payload is 65–72 tonnes, volume 70–100 m³. It unloads through floor hatches or on a wagon tippler.

Flatcar and container platform

The flatcar is a wagon with a flat floor and no sides, for oversized and long cargo: pipes, machinery, steel structures. Floor length is about 13.3 m, payload around 70 tonnes. The container (fitting) platform is a specialised flatcar with fittings for ISO containers (1×40′ or 2×20′, 60/80 ft long, payload 60–73 t). Fitting platforms are the backbone of container rail transport along the Middle Corridor.

Tank wagon

The tank wagon is a vessel-on-wheels for liquids: crude and oil products, liquefied gases, chemicals, food liquids. Payload is 60–73 tonnes, tank volume 72–88 m³. Oil tank wagons are the key fleet for moving Caspian oil to the ports of Batumi and Poti.

Hopper

The hopper is a self-discharging funnel-shaped wagon with bottom hatches: the cargo pours out by gravity. There are several kinds:

  • grain hopper (covered, for grain), volume up to ~101 m³;
  • cement hopper (for cement and powders);
  • mineral hopper (for mineral fertilisers).

Hopper payload is 64–75 tonnes, volume 42–146 m³ depending on cargo density.

Refrigerated wagon

The refrigerated (insulated) wagon holds a set temperature for perishables: food, meat, fruit, vegetables. Payload is about 40–46 tonnes; the key spec here is not tonnage but the temperature range and insulation.

Which wagons matter in the Middle Corridor

For delivery to Ukraine along the Middle Corridor, container (fitting) platforms are used most (containers on the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway), along with boxcars and gondolas for general and bulk cargo. Development prospects

The wagon fleet is being modernised, which directly lowers rail-shipping costs. There is a shift to wagons with higher axle load (25 tf) and larger body volume — they carry more per trip. The share of articulated container platforms (for 2×40′) is growing, and fleet telemetry and digitalisation are advancing. As container traffic on the Middle Corridor grows, demand for modern fitting platforms will keep rising while unit costs fall.
