Cargo tracking: container, wagon and truck
Knowing where the cargo is right now means peace of mind and the ability to react in time. A sea container, a railway wagon and a truck are tracked differently: by their own numbers and in different systems. We break down how to track each leg separately and how to get end-to-end tracking of the whole multimodal delivery to Ukraine.

How to track a container (sea)
A sea container is tracked by one of the numbers: the container number (ISO 6346 — see container markings), the Bill of Lading (B/L) number or the booking number. Where to look:
- the shipping line site (Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, etc.) — enter the number in the Tracking section;
- the port/terminal site — the handling status (discharge, pickup);
- aggregators — services that gather many lines' data in one window.
Typical statuses: gated in, loaded on vessel, in transit, discharged, released. The vessel itself can be tracked by name or IMO number via AIS services — its position is visible in real time.
How to track a wagon (rail)
A railway wagon is tracked by the wagon number (8 digits) or by the SMGS note number. Location data (wagon “dislocation”) is provided by:
- railway systems and national operators;
- dislocation services and forwarder portals connected to the railway databases.
The wagon's path by station is visible: dispatch, movement, the break of gauge at the border (see track gauge), arrival. In the “1520 space” (Central Asia, the Caucasus, Ukraine) tracking by wagon number runs on one database.
How to track a truck (LKW / road)
Road transport is tracked via the vehicle's GPS telematics and the carrier's system by plate or CMR number. What is available:
- real-time position and speed, estimated arrival (ETA);
- geofences and notifications on passing waypoints;
- the driver app and the forwarder's TMS.
This is the most “live” tracking — a truck sends coordinates almost continuously.
End-to-end tracking of a multimodal shipment
The catch is that each leg has its own system. IoT trackers and telematics
For valuable, fragile and refrigerated cargo, an independent GPS/GSM tracker with sensors is placed in the container: position, temperature, shocks/tilt, door opening. Data flows in real time, and an alert is sent on a deviation (overheating, opening). This complements ordinary tracking and simplifies settlement in an insurance claim.
If there are no updates
Sometimes the status “freezes” — that is normal at the joints (transshipment, gauge change, waiting for a ship/ferry). If there is no data for a long time, the forwarder asks the line, the railway or the driver directly. A single operator handles this for you.
Development prospects
Tracking is becoming end-to-end and predictive: real-time visibility platforms unite all modes, AI predicts ETA and delays, IoT sensors and electronic documents spread, and the blockchain bill of lading is being tested. For the Middle Corridor this means transparent control of the cargo on every leg in real time.
