Dangerous goods are substances and articles that can harm people, transport or the environment in transit — from paints and batteries to aerosols and lithium batteries. They can be shipped, but under strict rules, with special documents and packaging. What dangerous goods are

A dangerous good (DG) is cargo assigned to one of the UN hazard classes. Each has its own UN number (e.g. UN 1263 — paint), a proper shipping name, a class and a packing group (I, II or III by degree of hazard). These data decide how the cargo is packed, marked and documented.

The nine hazard classes

The UN classification is the same for every mode of transport:

Each class has its own hazard sign (a diamond) on the packaging and the vehicle.

Rules by mode of transport

Each mode has its own rulebook, but all are based on the UN Model Regulations:

For a multimodal shipment this means IMDG applies on the sea leg, RID on rail, ADR on road, and the documents must be consistent.

MSDS — the safety data sheet: what and why

The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), also called an SDS, is a document from the substance maker with its full characteristics. Under the GHS standard it has 16 sections: composition, hazards, first aid, firefighting, storage and transport conditions, protective equipment, and the UN number and class.

Why it is needed:

  • classification — the MSDS tells whether the cargo is dangerous and which class;
  • booking — without an MSDS the forwarder and carrier will not accept the cargo;
  • packing and marking — the sheet sets the packaging and label requirements;
  • safety — handlers, crew and emergency services use it in an incident.

Put simply, without an MSDS a dangerous good will not move — it is the starting point of all paperwork.

What is needed to ship dangerous goods

  • MSDS (safety data sheet) — the basis of classification;
  • Dangerous Goods Declaration (DGD) — with the UN number, class and packing group;
  • UN-certified packaging by packing group (I/II/III);
  • Marking and hazard labels on the packaging and the vehicle;
  • for road — an ADR driver certificate and vehicle approval;
  • where required — permits for certain classes.

Dangerous goods on the Middle Corridor: limits

The multimodal Middle Corridor carries dangerous goods, but with limits. On the sea leg from the Port of Poti IMDG applies, on the Caspian crossing and rail RID, on road ADR. The most tightly regulated are class 1 (explosives) and class 7 (radioactive) — often needing special permits or not accepted; ferries and tunnels have their own class limits; lithium batteries (class 9) have their own rules. All of this is checked in advance, at classification from the MSDS.

Development prospects

DG processing is going digital: electronic DGDs and safety data sheets, shared UN-number databases and automated class-compatibility checks. ADR, RID and IMDG are regularly harmonised with the UN Model Regulations, which simplifies multimodal transport. For the Middle Corridor this means faster, more predictable handling of dangerous goods.
