Weight vs volumetric weight: how freight is charged
Why is a box of pillows charged like cargo many times heavier? Because the carrier looks not only at the actual weight but also at the volumetric weight, and charges for the greater of the two. We break down what volumetric weight is, how it is calculated for air, road, sea and express, and how to avoid overpaying on delivery to Ukraine.
What chargeable weight is
Chargeable weight is the greater of two: the actual (gross) weight and the volumetric weight. The formula is simple: chargeable weight = max(actual, volumetric). Freight is charged on it.
Why volumetric weight is used
Space in a plane, a truck or a container is limited by volume as well as by mass. Light but bulky cargo (pillows, plastics, packaging) takes a lot of space and weighs little — if you charged by weight only, the carrier would move “air” at a loss. So volumetric weight converts volume into notional kilograms.
Formula by mode of transport
Each mode has its own factor to convert volume into weight:
| Mode | Volumetric weight formula | 1 m³ ≈ |
|---|---|---|
| Air | L×W×H (cm) ÷ 6000 | 167 kg |
| Road | 1 m³ = 333 kg (÷3000) | 333 kg |
| Sea (LCL) | the greater of weight and volume | 1000 kg |
| Courier/express | L×W×H (cm) ÷ 5000 | 200 kg |
For air, for example, volumetric weight = length × width × height (in cm) ÷ 6000, which gives about 167 kg per cubic metre.
Worked example
Take a box of 1 × 1 × 1 m (1 m³), actual weight 100 kg:
| Mode | Actual | Volumetric | Charged for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air | 100 kg | 167 kg | 167 kg |
| Road | 100 kg | 333 kg | 333 kg |
| Sea (LCL) | 0.1 t | 1 m³ | 1 freight ton |
As you can see, for air and road the volumetric weight is greater than the actual — you pay for it. For sea LCL a “freight ton” is used — the greater of 1 tonne and 1 m³.
Loading metre (LDM) for road
In road groupage a loading metre (LDM) is also used — one metre of trailer length across the full width. One LDM in a standard trailer is treated as roughly 1,750 kg. The final charge is the greatest of weight, volume and LDM.
How to cut the chargeable weight
- use dense packing with no voids or excess size (see cargo securing);
- consolidate shipments to fill the volume more tightly (LCL consolidated cargo);
- for dense, heavy cargo pick a mode charged by weight.
Chargeable weight in a multimodal shipment
On a multimodal route each leg may calculate the chargeable weight its own way (sea by freight ton, road by LDM). A single operator works out the rate for the whole route in advance so there are no surprises. The correct weight and volume come from the packing list.
Development prospects
Measuring cargo is being automated: warehouses install dynamic dimensioners that instantly measure size and weight, and pricing becomes dynamic and transparent. For delivery along the Middle Corridor this means an accurate, fair chargeable-weight calculation without manual errors.
Summary
Freight is charged on the greater of actual and volumetric weight — so packaging and loading density directly affect the price. ABU JORJIA will calculate the chargeable weight for the whole route and advise how to optimise it. Send a request.
