How to read railway wagon markings: number, stencils and signs

Reference7 min read

A freight railway wagon carries a “passport” in numbers and stencils: the wagon number, payload, tare, repair and build dates, hazard signs. Reading them lets you identify the wagon type, track it by number and check it is fit for the trip. We break down railway wagon markings — for the 1,520 mm gauge space (Georgia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Central Asia) and, for comparison, the European UIC numbering.

Diagram of the 8-digit wagon number in the 1520 system: type, axles, serial, check digit
Breakdown of the 8-digit wagon number in the 1520 system (CIS/OSJD). On 1435 gauge (Europe, Turkey) a 12-digit UIC number is used.

What is marked on a freight wagon

  • the wagon number (8 digits) with a check digit;
  • payload and tare (empty weight);
  • the volume of the body or tank (boxcar, gondola, tank);
  • the wagon wheelbase and length;
  • the build date and place;
  • repair stencils (depot and overhaul);
  • hazard signs (for tanks and dangerous goods);
  • ownership (keeper, home railway/country).

The wagon number in the 1520 space (8 digits)

This is not a “Russian” system but the common CIS/OSJD railways system — shared by Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and the whole 1,520 mm network. Each freight wagon has a unique 8-digit number; the digits encode:

  • 1st — the wagon type;
  • 2nd — the number of axles;
  • 3rd — technical features;
  • 4th–7th — the serial number and features (incl. hand brake and end platform);
  • 8th — the check digit.

The first digit — the wagon type

DigitWagon type
2Boxcar
4Flatcar
6Gondola
7Tank wagon
8Refrigerated (insulated)
3, 9Other and special

So a number starting with 6 is a gondola, with 7 a tank wagon. For more on the kinds see railway wagon types.

The check digit

The last, 8th digit is the check digit (introduced in the 1520 system in 1984). It is computed from the other seven by the weight series 2-1-2-1… (from the right) and verifies the number was written correctly. If it does not match, the number has an error. CIS/OSJD railways use it to validate and track the wagon automatically.

European numbering (UIC, 12 digits)

On the standard 1,435 mm gauge (Turkey, EU) a different system applies — the 12-digit UIC number with a country/keeper code, wagon type and its own check digit. So the same cargo travels in differently numbered wagons on the way Asia → Georgia/Ukraine (1520, 8 digits) and Asia → Turkey/EU via Kars (1435, UIC 12 digits). On the gauge itself see track gauge.

Weight and dimension stencils

The body carries the specific wagon data:

  • payload (max cargo weight, t);
  • tare — the empty wagon weight (for the net figure);
  • the volume of the body or tank, m³;
  • the wagon wheelbase and length.

Repair and build stencils

Separate stencils show the build date and place and the repair due dates — depot (DR) and overhaul (KR) with the date and works. They show when the wagon was serviced and until when it is fit for use.

Hazard signs

Tanks and wagons with dangerous goods carry hazard signs and an emergency-card number by cargo class. See dangerous goods (ADR/IMO DG).

Why it matters for an importer

By the wagon number you track the cargo (see cargo tracking), by the first digit you know the wagon type, and by the stencils the payload and fitness. All of it is part of control on the multimodal route via the Middle Corridor.

Development prospects

Wagon markings are going digital: RFID tags and electronic wagon passports, automatic number reading at stations, real-time dislocation. For the Middle Corridor this means more transparent and faster control of the rolling stock.

Summary

A wagon marking is its passport: number, type, weights, repairs and signs — and the 1520 and 1435 systems differ. Reading it lets you control the cargo in transit. ABU JORJIA arranges rail transport and wagon control to Ukraine end-to-end — send a request.

Frequently asked questions

How many digits are in a wagon number?

In the 1520 space (CIS/OSJD) a freight wagon has an 8-digit number; on standard 1435 gauge a 12-digit UIC number is used.

Is the 8-digit number a Russian system?

No — it is the common CIS/OSJD system shared by Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and the whole 1520 network.

What does the first digit mean?

The wagon type: 2 boxcar, 4 flatcar, 6 gondola, 7 tank wagon, 8 refrigerated, 3/9 other.

What is the check digit?

The 8th digit, computed from the other seven (weight series 2-1-2-1 from the right) to verify the number.

Which digit starts a gondola or a tank wagon?

A gondola starts with 6 and a tank wagon with 7.

What are DR and KR stencils?

Repair marks — DR is depot repair, KR is overhaul — with the date and works, showing when the wagon was serviced.

What is a UIC wagon number?

The 12-digit number used on standard-gauge (Europe, Turkey) wagons, with a country/keeper code and its own check digit.

How do I track a wagon by number?

Enter the wagon number in the railway or operator dislocation system to see its route and status.
